    For all you Puritan Heads

For those of you that love the Puritans, in the weeks that follow, I am going to being posting some quotes from them and/or about them. I love the Puritans. I love and enjoy what these men have written. I have greatly benefited from them in regards to my passion and love for the Lord Christ.

My first book that I read by a puritan was "A Sure Guide to Heaven" by Joseph Alleine. This man was, as the the introductory note states, "greedy for the conversion of souls". Alleine writes with such passion, that he makes me weep because of my lack of zeal for the lost. He writes to the unconverted because Alleine knows and is confident that God desires to save those who are His most vile enemies. This belief is evident by Alleine's passion, when he communicates that if he were run out of ink for his quill, that he would empty his veins for ink. This is passion, and zeal for the damned. May we all learn from those that were greedy for winning souls to Christ because we were also dead in our trespasses and sins before God regenerated us.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from Alleine:

“Therefore it is to them [the lost] I shall first apply myself in these pages. But from where shall I fetch my argument? With what shall I win them? O that I could tell! I would write to them in tears, I would weep out every argument, I would empty my veins for ink, I would petition them on my knees. O how thankful should I be if they would be prevailed with to repent and turn. How long have I laboured for you! How often would I have gathered you! This is what I have prayed for and studied for these many years; that I might bring you to God. O that I might now do it! Will you yet be entreated?

But, O Lord, how insufficient I am for this work. Alas, with what shall I pierce the scales of Leviathan, or make the heart feel that is hard as the nether millstone? Shall I go and speak to the grave and expect the dead will obey me and come forth? Shall I make an oration to the rocks, or declaim to the mountains, and think to move them with arguments? Shall I make the blind to see? From the beginning of the world was it not heard that a man opened the eyes of the blind (John 9:32). But, O Lord, Thou canst pierce the heart of the sinner. I can only draw the bow at a venture, but do Thou direct the arrow between the joints of the harness. Slay the sin, and save the soul of the sinner that casts his eyes on these pages.”

    Desiring God's Book Sale

As I was reading through different blogs that I enjoy, I found a blog entry in regards to a book sale at Desiring God's website. All of the books on the website are on sale for $5 each. This is an amazing deal! Desiring God's ministry has been so gracious not only to bless people with this book sale, but also this ministry has offered audio/text sermons by John Piper and others for quite sometime.

I am planning on buying a couple of books that I have desired to read. I would recommend purchasing any of the books available. The first John Piper book that I read was "The Supremacy of God in Preaching". This book stirred me with a great desire to reverence God's word and the preaching of it.

The one book that I want to get is "Desiring God". I want to learn more about what John Piper means by "Christian Hedonism" because I not only want to know about God, but I want to find my greatest satisfaction and joy in Him.

In addition, this would be a great time to purchase books for friends and family that may not know the Lord Christ. I would recommend purchasing John Piper's books "Don't waste your life", or "Seeing and Savioring Jesus Christ".

Let us be blessed through this ministry and bless others also!

    Crunch Time

Well, the time has come to take a break from my studies. I need to clear my mind because tonight is going to be a late night. Over the past ten months, approximately, I have been attending University of Phoenix via the Internet. I have definitely enjoyed my classes. The learning environment could be better, but the class discussions have been helpful and challenging.

In the next 16 hours I plan on finishing two Power Point presentations and an eight page paper. Obviously this may sound like a great deal of work, but the past eight weeks have built up to this point. That is why I have titled this post "Crunch Time".

In the past weeks I have learned a great deal about how to overcome Procrastination and how to effectively manage my time. So how does a person overcome procrastination and effectively manage his or her time? I would say that the discipline is the key, but how can we be discipline, what is our motivation? I am confident that a person that is able to apply the text in first Corinthians will be a person of great discipline.

"Therefore whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God".

The application of living for the glory of God. What is the glory that Paul is talking about? Why should we "do all to the glory of God"? I will discuss that in a later post. For now realize that God's glory is our highest aim.

Time to get back to work.

    The Importance of Application

In the past month our pastor has start a two year program to train men to be servant leaders. Last month we (a group of 10 men) read through R.C. Sproul's book "Knowing Scripture". This book was not only insightful, but also easy to read. R.C. challenges his readers to stop being slothful and lazy about studying scripture and begin to cultivate a healthy habit of studying the Word of God. R.C. provides helpful hints to help a layman, like myself, to interpret scripture correctly. I heartily recommend reading this book to any person who desires to begin, find refreshment in and encouragement in, studying the Word.

To switch gears, the group is currently reading through a book by Daniel Doriani. The book is titled "Putting the Truth to Work: The Theory and Practice of Biblical Application". This book is a scholarly work and is a bit difficult to read, but sitting down and purposing to understand the goal of application, and how to apply scripture correctly is well worth the time and effort.

So what is the main goal of application is to "Know God and conform ourselves to Him". The scripture that Doriani uses is Jeremiah 9:23-24 which states that our lives need to be God-centered, the verses say,

"This is what the Lord says: "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom or the strong man boast in his strength or the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts in this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, who exercises, kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the Lord."(emphasis added)

Many Christians know the truth of these verses, but do not act as if this was not the center of application (Doriani, 2001). Understanding and knowing the Lord is what every Christian must boast in and nothing less.
